On 30th May this year three major domestic cup finals will take place across Europe. The FA Cup in England, Copa del Rey in Spain and the DFB-Pokal in Germany. The following weekend (7th June) the Coppa Italia final will take place.
The FA Cup is the world’s oldest football tournament. The first final was played on 16th March in 1872, in front of 2,000 spectators at the Kennington Oval in London. Wanderers beat Royal Engineers and the only goal was scored by Morton Betts.
In Spain they have already reached the semi-final stage. The four clubs left competing are FC Barcelona – Villarreal and Athletic ClubBilbao – Espanyol. FC Barcelona have won the Spanish Cup 26 times, Athletic have won it on 23 occasions. Will we get a final between these two sides for the 2015 Copa del Rey final, or perhaps is this the season when Villarreal, who never won either the Copa del Rey before, finally will get their hands on the trophy?
Over to Germany and the DFB-Pokal. The German football giants Bayern Munich are more often than not one of the two clubs reaching the final, played in the Olympic Stadium (Berlin). Of the twelve latest finals they have played eight and won seven. Whether Bayern Munich will reach the final again, and who they will face should they do so, remains to be seen but unlike the FA Cup most of the big clubs still remains in the competition at the moment.
In Italy the Coppa Italia final will be played, with less competition for attention, on Sunday June 7th. As always the game takes place at the Olympic Stadium in Rome. Like in Spain the Italians have reached the semi final stage in their domestic cup competition. Juventus – Fiorentina and Lazio –Napoli will be facing one another. Napoli won the Coppa Italia in 2012 and 2014, beating Juve and Fiorentina in the finals. Lazio brought home the cup title in 2013 by beating local rivals Roma in the final. The most successful Serie A club recently ,Juventus, have won the Coppa Italia nine times although the last time was in 1995. Fiorentina have six cup titles, the last came in 2001. The Cup Final in Italy may not be as famous and the FA Cup in England but all four clubs left in the competition will do everything they can to get this title, and the expectations from their fans is huge.
