Bundesliga: Who can stop Bayern Munich?

Bundesliga began its history in the season of 1963/64. There were only twelve clubs which were able to celebrate the Bundesliga Meister for more than half a century. Bayern Munich is the club with the most titles, 24.

The club has an opportunity to write history in the upcoming season. Last season’s league title was the 3rd in a row. It is the fourth time that Bayern Munich archived this: 1972-74, 1985-87, 1999-2001 and now 2013-2015. It may be the first time that the club wins the league four times in a row. Series of runners-up has declined year by year: full 25 points in 2012/13 season, 19 points the following year and now 10 points.

Last seasons runners-up Wolfsburg have earned a lot of praise. This was their second best place ever in the Bundesliga (Die Wölfe as they’re nicknamed won Bundesliga in the season of 2008/09) and in addition they also became German cup champions. They will be playing in the Champions League next season.

Borussia Mönchengladbach claimed third place. A good result for the club after what has been a few heavy decades. Borussia Mönchengladbach won the Bundesliga five times during the seventies and in addition the UEFA Cup twice. Next year they have the chance to win a European trophy again. It is probably too optimistic to think that they can win the Champions League though.

The fourth German team that has a chance to play in Champions League is Bayer Leverkusen. This stable top team has never won Bundesliga but got very close on occasions. They got a disappointing second place five times. Can Stefan Kießling lead the team right up to the Die Meisterschale?

Schalke 04 and Borussia Dortmund are the two arch-rivals clubs that will both be playing in Europa League in the upcoming season. Revierderby, as the game between these two these two clubs, is one of the hottest games in Europe. The black and yellow can be proud of 5 Bundesliga titles – the last two were won in 2010/11 and 2012/13.

Hamburger SV is the only club that has never been relegated from the Bundesliga. The situation became critical last season however. HSV were only saved from going down when they scored in the decisive match against Karlsruhe from a free kick in the extra time.
