La Liga clubs won both Champions League and Europa League two years in a row. If we summarize results from these two tournaments for the last ten years, clubs from Spain have dominated. Five titles in Champions League (four for Barcelona and one for Real Madrid) and six in Europa League (four for Sevilla and two for Atlético Madrid). On top of that, Barcelona won the FIFA Club World Cup two times and Real Madrid one during that period. Barça will get another chance in December at the tournament which will be hosted in Japan this year. It is not by accident that the world’s two best players are in La Liga’s largest clubs. Only Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo were awarded the Golden Ball since 2007.

El Clasico is the most spectacular of all football matches, the derby between Real Madrid and Barcelona. They have played 229 competitive matches and Real Madrid has a slight edge: 92 wins against Barça’s 89. There is no great risk of scoreless matches when these two giants meet at Santiago Bernabeu or Camp Nou. Barcelona has scored in eighteenth matches of El Clasico (since April 27, 2011). Real Madrid is not much worse with goals in the last sixteen matches (since May 3, 2011).

The El Clasico rivals have been seriously challenged recently by a newcomer: Atlético Madrid. The club played eight derby matches between Real and Atleti during the last season. Atlético won four matches and played three draws. Unfortunately there was a loss in the last and most important game: return of quarterfinals in Champions League. This summer there is a big turnover of players in Atlético Madrid as usual. Both Arda Turan (Barcelona) and Mario Mandzukic (Juventus) leave. But Jackson Martínez joins from Porto and Luciano Vietto from Villarreal. The fans support inside of the Vicente Calderón is something different and needs to be experienced live. A lot of the time the atmosphere is helped by the manager Diego Simeone gesturing towards the crowd to raise the noise levels.
